Learning to shave with a straight razor take time, practice and patience. It has a longer learning curve than cartridge or safety razors. Straight razors are incredibly sharp and the blade is completely exposed, making it very easy to cut or nick yourself. Because the blade is so exposed, you can cut yourself pretty bad if you're not careful. That's why it is important to spend the necessary time to learn how to properly shave with a straight razor. Take your time and go very slow at the beginning. Give yourself enough time so you are not rushing while shaving. It will take some time and practice, but once you have mastered the technique you'll be able to achieve the closest and smoothest shave you have ever experienced.
You are much less likely to experience razor burn or ingrown hairs when you shave with a straight razor. With the right technique, you should achieve an incredibly comfortable shave without any skin irritation. Straight razors can also be a more cost effective option. With the proper care, your straight razor can last for years and years. Plus, you don't have to purchase blade refills as with other razors.
The first step is familiarizing yourself with the razor and learning how to hold it properly. Use a firm grip to hold the handle. As with any razor, you will want to let the weight of the razor do the work. Don't apply a lot of pressure, rather let the blade do the work for you. You will need to practice to know how much pressure to apply. There should be enough pressure so that the blade is effectively removing the hair, but not too much that you cut yourself or are too aggressive. This will mostly depend on the weight of the razor. Straight razors are available in different weights. Knowing the weight of the blade will help you determine how much pressure you need to apply. If you choose a lighter blade, you will need to apply a little more pressure. If you choose a heavier blade, you will need barely any pressure at all. Taking the time to practice and getting to know your blade will give you the best results.
Next will be learning the angle to use. The general recommendation is to hold the blade at a 30 degree angle against the surface of your skin. If the angle is too flat the blade will simply pull and tug at the hair without actually removing it. If the angle is too sharp, you are very likely to cut yourself. Depending on the direction your hair grows and your shaving preference (with, against or across the grain) you may need to hold the blade in different positions depending on what area of your face or neck you are shaving.
When you are ready to start shaving, begin your shaving process like any other shave. Take a shower or apply a warm towel to your face to soften the skin and hair and open your pores. Create your lather with shaving cream or soap using a shaving brush. You may need to reapply lather during your shave, so make sure you have enough. With a straight razor, you use shorter strokes compared to a cartridge or safety razor. Use very short strokes at first while you are still learning to use your razor. Make sure to gently pull your skin taut with one hand and then use short strokes with the blade to shave. It is very important to make sure your skin is tight to create the perfect surface for the blade to easily glide across your skin without getting any nicks or cuts.
Because the blade is completely exposed, it is able to get much closer to the base of the hair than other razors. This gives you a much closer and smoother shave. If you need to do additional passes, rinse or wipe the blade then reapply shaving cream or soap before your second pass. It is important not to apply too much pressure trying to get everything on the first pass. Remember, let the razor do the work. Especially if you are new to using a straight razor, it may take time and practice before you have the technique down. If you need more passes, you can always go over it again. Try to avoid doing too many passes though to prevent irritation or razor burn. As with other razors, make sure to rinse the blade often during your shave to remove hair and shaving cream or soap. The cleaner the blade, the closer the shave will be.
As with other razors, it is important to properly clean and care for your straight razor. In order for the razor to be effective and past a long time, you will need to take care of it. Maintaining a straight razor is fairly simple though. Make sure to thoroughly clean it after every use so there is no leftover soap or hair stuck to the blade. Wipe the blade clean with a dry towel to remove any water. Leaving water on the blade can cause it to rust. Make sure you place your razor somewhere where it can fully dry.
To maintain your razor you will need a strop and a wet stone for honing. Stropping is the process of sharpening and aligning the blade. You will need to strop the blade regularly to keep it aligned, sharp and working best. Depending on how often you shave, you may want to strop the razor every week. Once you have practiced a few times the stropping process should be pretty simple. You will also need to hone the blade using a wet stone. You should not have to hone the blade very often, only occasionally or when you notice it is getting dull. Honing the blade with a wet stone is the proper way to sharpen the blade so you get the best shave possible. There are even services where you can send them your blade and they will hone it for you if you don't want to purchase a wet stone or are unfamiliar with the process. Learning how to hone the blade with a wet stone can be a great way to be more involved with the process and learn to care for your razor yourself.

A good skincare routine can actually help improve your shave as well as prevent many common issues such as redness, irritation, razor burn, acne, dryness, and other problems. Practicing regular skin care will also help your skin recover after shaving. No matter what your skin type is or what your current routine looks like, we've gathered the basic tips that work well for everyone. Here are a few easy steps to create an effective, simple skincare routine that will leave your skin healthy, clean and feeling great.
During the day, your skin goes through a lot. It is exposed to dust, dirt and other particles that can irritate it and clog your pores. It is important to wash your face daily to keep it clean and free from any debris that can cause issues. Washing your face both in the morning and at night is preferred, however you should aim to wash your face at least once every day. If you only wash your face once a day, wash it at night so you can wash away any dirt, dust or dead skin cells from throughout the day. Make sure that you are always using a face wash, never bar soap on your face. Bar soaps usually contain harsh ingredients that can quickly dry out and irritate your skin. As mentioned before, the skin on your face is very different than the skin on your body. It is important to use the right products on your face. You don't have to spend a lot on an expensive face wash. If you're on a budget, a simple face wash or cleanser will work just fine. Gently wash your face well each day with your face wash and warm water.
One very important skincare tip for everyone is a simple one: SPF. Regardless of what the weather is like, you should wear sunscreen every single day. You are still exposed to UV rays even on cloudy or overcast days. Extended exposure to UV rays can have damaging effects on your skin and can potentially cause skin cancer. UV rays also drastically age your skin. Make sure to keep your skin protected and also looking healthy by applying sunscreen every day. Some daily moisturizers even have SPF in them, so you can moisturize and protect your skin in one step. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 or higher for everyday use. If you are outside for a long period of time, reapply sunscreen throughout the day to make sure your skin is well protected.
Another way to keep your skin clean, healthy and feeling great is exfoliation. Throughout your normal day, your skin is exposed to dust, dirt, and other particles in the air. Exfoliation helps clean your skin from these particles and removes dead skin cells. It is important to deep clean your skin regularly to prevent clogged pores or other issues from occurring. Only exfoliate once every few days or once a week, depending on your skin type. While exfoliation is incredibly beneficial, it can also cause dry or irritated skin if done too often. Remember, the skin on your face is very sensitive. Because you are scrubbing and deeply cleansing your skin, you only want to exfoliate once every few days. If you notice that you skin is still very irritated, try exfoliating less and slowly work your way up to once a week. Using the right type of exfoliator for your skin type will also help ensure you get an amazing clean while preventing additional irritation, redness, or dryness. Today, there are exfoliating products designed for every skin type so you can find the product that works best for you.
Another simple and easy tip for all skin types is moisturizing. The skin on your face can dry out very quickly, so it is important to moisturize it daily. Moisturizing is especially important for those who shave. During the shaving process, your skin loses a lot of moisture. It is important to replenish that moisture so your skin can effectively recover after shaving and you are not left with dry or red skin. Make sure to apply moisturizer after every shave. When it comes to choosing a moisturizer, you don't have to pick a fancy or expensive product. A simple and effective moisturizer is all you need. Moisturizing should be a part of your daily routine, regardless of what skin type you have. If you have dry skin, look for a moisturizer with ingredients that are extra hydrating and nourishing. If you have normal skin, any moisturizer should work. For those with oily skin, look for a moisturizer that doesn't contain many added oils. You can moisturize in the morning and at night for the most benefit. If you wash your face at night, just apply a small amount of moisturizer to your face right afterward. This is especially great if you have been in dry, hot weather or very cold weather all day. These conditions will dry out your skin, so make sure you are replenishing it at the end of the day.
When choosing which products to use, make sure you know your skin type. Different products will work better for different types of skin. Knowing whether you have normal, dry, oily or sensitive skin will help you choose the products that will work best for you and make the biggest improvement on your skin.
When it comes to skin care, find what works best for you. Everyone's skin is different, and your skincare routine can be as simple or extensive as you need. Take into consideration your skin type, what issues or problems you currently have, and what you would like to prevent. You can start with a few basic products and then add to your routine as needed. Spending just a few minutes each day and using simple products will help you to take proper care of your skin and keep it healthy.
]]>Double edged safety razors are available in two main designs: open comb and closed comb. Whether you're a beginner or have been shaving for years but are new to safety razors, you may be wondering what is the difference? The terms open and closed comb refer to the design of the razor head. Safety razor heads are usually constructed with a top plate, the blade, and then the bottom plate. Whether it is open or closed comb determines how exposed the blade is. The more exposed a blade is, the closer and more aggressive the shave will be. The difference in the razor head design will have a significant effect on your shave. Knowing the difference between the two options and how exactly it affects your shave will help you choose the right razor for you.
Closed comb razor heads have a safety bar underneath the razor blade. This straight bar provides extra protection against the blade and helps keep the skin stretched tight while shaving to reduce the risk of cuts or nicks. With a less aggressive design, the closed comb is an ideal option for those who shave every day. If you shave every day or every other day, your stubble should not be long, and you may find that a less aggressive razor is better on your skin for daily use. Closed comb may also be a great option for those with sensitive skin, or if you experience irritation, razor burn, or nicks easily. Because they are less aggressive and provide added protection, they are also great for wet shaving beginners or someone who is new to using safety razors.
Open comb razor heads do not have a bar that runs under the blade. Instead, they are made with a row of teeth on the bottom guard. This allows for more direct contact between the blade and your skin. Because there is no bar to help keep your skin tight, you will need to have this technique down. With practice, keeping your skin tight with each pass will be an easy habit to learn. Open comb safety razor heads are designed so that the blade is more exposed to create an incredibly close shave. The teeth run underneath the blade and help position your hair closer to the blade for a very direct shave. The design of the razor head also doesn't get clogged as easily because hair bristles and lather pass through the gaps in the teeth. Because they do not have a safety bar and are designed to get the hair as close to the blade as possible, open comb safety razors are usually more aggressive. Learning to use a more aggressive razor will take time and practice. It is important to take your time and go slow, as you are more likely to experience cuts or nicks with an aggressive design. Open comb razors may also require fewer passes because you are able to get most, if not all, of the hair on the first pass. This will depend on how sharp the blade is, your hair type, and how often you shave. If you are an experienced wet shaver and are looking for the ultimate close shave, the open comb may work best for you. If you have thick, curly or stubborn facial hair, the more aggressive comb design may also work better.
Choosing between an open or closed comb safety razor is largely based on preference. You should take into consideration your level of experience, how comfortable you are using safety razors, and your skin and hair type. While anyone can use either an open or closed comb and still get a great shave, you may find that one type works better for you. If you are a beginner or are still learning to use a safety razor, a closed comb will offer more protection and may be easier to learn with. For an experienced wet shaver who is comfortable with the technique and is looking for an incredibly close and smooth shave, you may prefer an open comb option best.

The shaving brush is a crucial tool when it comes to wet shaving. So why should you invest in a good shaving brush? While you can create a lather with your fingers, the shaving brush is how you achieve the light and creamy consistency for the perfect lather. Because the brush whips air into the shaving cream or soap, you can't get the same lather from just using your hands. Not only does the shaving brush create the right type of lather, but they also help with application and preparing your skin and hair. When you apply your shaving cream or soap, the bristles on the brush gently lift the hair away from your face. This allows the razor to get closer to the base of the hair, resulting in a closer shave. The bristles also help to exfoliate your skin by removing dead skin cells. Removing any dead skin cells will help your razor glide over your skin more closely for an even shave.
Like any wet shaving product, it may take some time to figure out what specific product works best for you. If you are new to wet shaving or are new to using a shaving brush, the number of choices can seem overwhelming. Shaving brushes are available in a wide variety or different shapes, sizes, bristle types, materials, and prices. If you are looking for your first brush, or just looking for a different kind of brush, we're here to help guide you to find the best shaving brush for you.
When choosing a shaving brush, it is best to understand the basics of a brush and what the differences of each type mean. When choosing a shaving brush, here are each of the factors to consider:
Bristles - The bristles, or hairs, on the top of the brush are one of the biggest deciding factors when choosing a shaving brush. Primarily, brushes are made from badger hair or synthetic fibers. There are a few different levels of quality when it comes to badger hair: Best, Pure, Super and Silvertip. They are named based on the specific hair that is used. Best and Pure are the base quality of badger hair, but they are also a great budget option while still offering a good quality bristle. Super is the second best grade of hair and comes at a slightly higher cost than Best and Pure. Silvertip is the highest quality hair, but also comes at a higher price point. If you want to learn more about each specific type of badger hair brush, check out our blog that talks all about the different badger hair shaving brushes.
Shaving brushes are also made using synthetic fibers. This is a great brush for those looking for a cruelty-free and vegan option. Synthetic fibers tend to last longer than natural hair, are easier to clean, and dry more quickly. While some prefer the texture and feel of natural hair, synthetic brushes have come a long way when it comes to quality, texture and feel. Many synthetic brushes are now made to resemble the softness and feel of the best natural hair brushes. Synthetic fibers brushes can also offer a good budget friendly option if you don't want to spend the money for one of the higher quality natural hair brushes. Synthetic fibers do not retain as much water as natural hair, so you will need to keep this in mind when lathering. However, because they do not retain as much water, they also dry much quicker.
Shaving brushes are also available in other types of hair, such as boar or horse hair. Boar and horse hair brushes are much more stiff than badger, which means they also retain less water. They do come at a much lower price point, but the quality is also lower than that of badger hair or synthetic fibers.
When it comes to the bristles, another thing to consider is the length or height. The length or height of the bristles is referred to as the Loft. Brushes come in a variety of different lengths. Choosing a bristle length is mostly based on personal preference. The height of the bristles may also depend on the size of your hand. Depending on your size, some may be more comfortable with either shorter or longer bristles. The knot is where the bristles come together and are glued into the base. The knot also helps determine the sturdiness of the bristles. You want the entire structure of the bristles to be sturdy enough so they can effectively whip the shaving cream or soap and hold up well. A good brush will have a sturdy knot but soft, flexible fibers that still exfoliate your skin and lift the hairs well. The knot size and loft height are usually measured in millimeters. Usually, the larger the knot, the larger the handle.
If you already have a preference between shaving cream or soap, this can also help you choose the type of bristle. Shaving soap requires a little added water to create a lather, so look for a type of bristle that is great for retaining water. Synthetic fibers retain a good amount of water and are great for using with shaving soaps. If you generally use shaving cream, you can choose from almost any bristle. Any type of bristle will still work with either cream or soap, it just depends on your preference.
Base - Next, you can look at the base of the brush. The base is the bottom of the brush to where the bristles begin. The size of the base will mostly depend on the size of your hand and personal preference. You want to choose a brush that is comfortable and fits in your hand well. Brushes are available in a wide variety of different sizes, styles and materials. When it comes to the base, you should consider the size first. The size should be comfortable enough to use regularly. Then, you can choose between different styles and materials. While there are hundreds of different bases to choose from, make sure to keep your budget in mind. Some bases are made of certain materials or include a unique design, but these tend to cost more. If you are new to using a shaving brush, if may be best to stick with a budget option at first. Then once you know the exact brush and size you want, you can spend a little more on the one that is perfect for you.
Handle - The handle is where you hold the brush while lathering and applying. The handle is particularly important when it comes to lathering. Make sure that you choose the right type and size of handle so that it is comfortable when whipping the shaving cream or soap into a lather. Handles are also available in a wide selection of different sizes and styles. Consider the size and shape of the handle first. Different shapes will feel different for everyone. If the handle feels too big or too heavy, you won't be able to comfortably whip the shaving cream or soap into a good lather. You want a handle that is easy to grip and fits well in your hand.
Once you understand the basic components and are ready to choose a brush, take into consideration your budget, preferences, and how long you have been wet shaving. If you are new to wet shaving, you may not want to buy a very expensive brush at first, until you know exactly what you want and what works best for you. Luckily, shaving brushes come in a range of prices, from very affordable to more expensive. Remember, it may take a few weeks of shaving with your new brush until you are fully comfortable with it and have learned how to use it well. Be patient and pay attention to how the brush feels and how easy it is to use. Once you have experimented with brushes and have a better idea of the type, size and length that will work best for you, you can spend a little more to get the exact brush that you want.

While it may seem like a lot of work at first, mapping the grain of your hair is actually pretty simple. Once you know which direction the hair grows in each spot, you can then determine the perfect direction to shave in based on that growth. It will take some time to test shaving in different directions to find what works best for you, but it will be worth it in the end.
Whether you have been shaving for years or only for a short time, you have probably seen and heard the terms "with the grain", "against the grain" or "across the grain". Especially if you are new to wet shaving, you may be wondering, what exactly do these terms mean, and how do they apply to shaving? These terms refer to the direction you shave based on your grain. If you shave with the grain (WTG), you are shaving in the direction the hair is growing. If you shave against the grain (AGT), you are shaving in the opposite direction in which the hair grows. If you shave across the grain (XGT), you are shaving perpendicular to the direction of growth. While there is a lot of debate on which direction you should shave, it ultimately will depend on you and your hair specifically.
The first step is figuring out which direction your hair grows in. The hair on your face and neck can grow in many different directions. While this may sound intimidating, once you have mapped out your hair and practiced shaving in specific directions a few times, it will become second nature. While everyone's hair is different and can grow in multiple directions, there are a few primary directions for hair growth on different areas of the face and neck. Here are some examples of common directions of hair growth:
To find the direction, or grain, of your own hair, follow these simple steps:
Deciding whether to shave with, against, or across the grain will depend on your own skin and hair. While you may hear others say that you should only shave in certain directions, just remember, everyone is different. Your hair is different from others, and you should ultimately do what works best for you. You don't have to stick to the rules, but rather use them as a guide to figure out what works for you.
Shaving with the grain will be easier on your skin and hair because you are moving in the direction of growth. Shaving against the grain can take more time and practice, but usually gives you a closer shave and smoother skin because you are shaving against the direction of growth to get as close to the skin as possible. Many people will end up shaving in two directions for one patch of hair. For example, you can do your first pass with the grain and your second pass against the grain. Remember to reapply lather between every pass.
For beginners, it may be best to start shaving with the grain. Shaving with the grain, or in the direction the hair is growing, is easier to start out with and you are less likely to experience irritation or redness. While it is more mild, it also may not give you the closest shave. When you are more advanced, try shaving against the grain. This takes more time and practice, however, shaving against the grain allows you to get closer to the base of the hair, giving you an incredibly close shave and smooth skin afterward. You are also more likely to experience irritation or razor burn when shaving against the grain, so take your time and go slow.
When you first try shaving in different directions, make sure to be patient. When trying something new, take your time and go slow. Remember, finding the right direction for your hair will take some time and practice. Try out different directions and combinations, then see how effective your shave was and how your skin feels afterward.
It is also important to note that your shaving products can play a role in the direction you shave. The safety razor is the best razor to use and will ultimately allow you to shave in different directions most effectively. Using cartridge razors is much more difficult and will not give you as good of a shave. The more blades going across your skin, the more chance of irritation. If you use a cartridge razor and do multiple passes, that is just more blades running over your skin and you'll have an increased chance of irritation or razor burn. The type of razor blades that you use and how sharp or mild they are can also be a big factor. You may find that after shaving in different directions, you will want to switch to a different razor blade. Make sure to take all of these factors into consideration when deciding on a shaving direction that works best for you. Once you have the direction down, you'll get a close, comfortable shave every time.

In order to have a clean, well-groomed and healthy beard, it is important to have a top-notch daily beard care routine. However, it can be confusing to find the perfect products and routine for you. With so many product options available, including beard brushes, shampoo, conditioner, oil and more, it can be difficult to know where to begin. We're giving you a running start by showcasing some of the best products for any beard length, plus how to use them in your daily routine.
Beard brushing is the most vital asset to growing your beard as it controls symmetry, style, and health. When you brush your beard, you pull away dead skin and built-up oil, allowing for more effective beard growth to take place. Not only does it keep your beard growing, but it also assists in keeping it moisturized as it exfoliates the skin and spreads natural oils across the beard follicles. Here are some of our favorite beard brushes:
The D.R. Harris Beard Brush provides a strong brush that can be used for any type of beard. It helps in alleviating itchiness and structures out of control hair. This brush's pure boar bristles are the perfect texture for exfoliating the skin beneath the beard and brushing through any type of beard hair, even thick and curly hair. The Black Forest beechwood handle allows for easy grip and helps you to distribute natural oils evenly to the skin and throughout the hair.
Mondial Beard Brush and Comb Set
This beard brush and comb set are the perfect grooming tools for any beard length. This set will assist you in any styling needs, whether you are taming beard hair to look clean, trimmed and slick, or letting it look wild, long and bushy. The brush and comb are the perfect combo for any grooming or styling needs.
Beard hair is very different from other types of hair on the body. Just as the skin on your face is different than your other skin, the same goes for your facial hair. For this reason, using body wash or soaps used for everyday showers or baths are not recommended to use on your facial hair. It is best to wash your beard hair 1-3 times per week with specified beard shampoo and conditioner. This prevents bacteria build-up and keeps your beard and the skin underneath healthy. Below we have one of our favorite combinations of beard soap and conditioner:
Mondial Antica Barberia Original Talc Beard Soap
Mondial Antica Barberia Original Talc is made in Italy and offers a warm and refreshing smell. This soap is meant to cleans beard pores and provide a pleasant, fresh sensation. The formula is based on old world barbers and traditional customs to provide a classic scent. This product will leave your beard with a pleasant and fresh aroma.
Taylor of Old Bond Street Moustache and Beard Conditioner
One conditioner we love is the Taylor of Old Bond Street Moustache and Beard Conditioner. This conditioner is designed to tame out of control mustache and beard hair. It uses a formula of Aloe Vera, Sunflower Oil, and many more natural ingredients to rejuvenate facial hair and the skin underneath. After use, it provides incredible comfort to both your skin and beard hair and also reduces itching.
Although brushes assist in spreading natural oils, it always helps to apply beard oil. The common carrier oils used as the base for beard oils are specifically added to hydrate and moisturize your skin and hair. They help enhance the texture of your beard while also improving the skin healthy under the beard by preventing dry skin and dandruff. Here are some quick tips on how to effectively apply beard oil:
1. Make sure to apply most of the oil at the base of your beard, as close to the skin as possible. Then, work it throughout the rest of your beard.
2. Use a beard brush or comb to evenly distribute the oil throughout your beard
3. Work it through into your beard until you feel the oil throughout your entire beard and on the skin beneath it
If you want to learn more about beard oil, how it works and the different types, check out our guide to beard oil. Below is one of our favorite beard oils that is perfect for protecting and hydrating any beard type:
This beard oil has a rich, soothing feeling that is sure to make your beard silky smooth. Its natural oil blend protects skin, prevents itching/flaking, and allows for easy styling and grooming. The Macadamia Seed Oil formula hydrates and keeps your beard moisturized the entire day regardless of the weather. The non-comedogenic formula used in the product also ensures safety for all skin types. The Clubman Pinaud Beard Oil is perfect for those looking to protect and moisturize their beard and skin.
There are many ways to shape, tame and style your beard depending on the style you are going for. There are also many products to choose from that can help you achieve your favorite beard style. Depending on your hair type, you can use beard oils, balms, or waxes.
Beard oil is mostly used for hydrating and conditioning the beard, so the hair continues to grow out healthy and the skin underneath is hydrated. Beard oil is commonly used for shorter beard hair, but is great for all lengths.
Beard balms work as a leave in conditioner/moisturizer. Its creamy consistency is also used to tame and style beards of medium to long length.
Beard wax is much thicker than beard balms because of its heavier dose of beeswax. Beard wax is especially great for those that have longer beards with very thick hair. Wax products can shape and style even the craziest of beards. It is suggested that if you want the slick beard consistency from using oil and the outstanding shaping capability of wax that using beard oil at night and beard wax in the morning would work best. Below is one of our favorite beard styling products:
Clubman Beard Balm and Styling Wax
This product is stellar for shaping and styling beard hair. Its unique blend of natural beeswax, soy protein, and coconut oil give your hair a vibrant shine and control frizz throughout the day. The thick consistency of the Clubman Beard Balm and Styling Wax make it perfect for any hair types or lengths. Like other products in the Clubman collection, this product is non-comedogenic to ensure it will be safe to use on your beard and skin.

Your razor is something that you use on your skin every week, and sometimes every day. Make sure that you are taking care of it properly and cleaning it regularly. When you shave, your razor collects skin and hair. If you don't clean it out, this can clog your razor and lead to bacteria growth. Plus, any skin or hair left in the razor will affect how close and smooth your shave is. Rust and bacteria can also easily grow on your razor due to leftover water residue. This is not only bad for your skin, but also bad for your razor. Your razor is a very important part of your daily routine. Make sure that you are keeping it clean and dry to not only ensure a better shaving experience and healthy skin, but a longer-lasting razor. Read our simple tips below for caring for your razor.

Many people think that their shaving routine begins once they put their razor to their face. However, your shaving routine should start before you even pick up your shaving cream and razor. The steps you take before you even begin to shave actually play a big role in the success of your shave. Having a proper pre-shave routine is essential for a successful shaving experience. In this post, we’ll walk you through each pre-shave step so you can create the best routine for you.
When you shave, your skin and hair are exposed to tugging, sharp blades, and moisture loss. This process can take a serious toll on your skin. The skin on your face is more sensitive than the rest of your skin. Therefore, it is important to take the necessary steps to ensure you are being gentle and taking care of the skin on your face. This is where having the proper pre-shave routine can help tremendously. The right pre-shave routine will help soften your skin and hair, allowing the razor blade to easily glide and shave the hair without aggressive tugging or pulling. A good pre-shave routine will also help open your pores and prepare the hair follicle for a close shave. This allows you to shave the hair in one or two passes, which can also reduce irritation and dryness. The more times the razor blade passes over the skin, the better chance of experiencing irritation, redness, dry skin, or even nicks. The goal of shaving, and a proper pre-shave routine, is to make the shaving process as effective and gentle as possible.
The first step in any pre-shave routine is showering or washing your face with warm water. Showering before your shave is preferable, but, if you are short on time, spend a few minutes washing your face with warm water. Warm water helps to open your pores, allowing for easier access to the hair follicle. The warm water also softens your skin and hair. This not only makes the hair easier to lift and shave, but also makes your skin easier to pull and tighten to get a close shave. Softening your skin creates greater elasticity and reduces the chance of irritation or nicks. This first step is crucial in any pre-shave process. You still need to take a warm shower or wash your face before shaving, even if you are using a pre-shave oil or other pre-shave products.
A successful shave is largely based on knowing your skin and hair type. Once you identify your skin and hair type, you can choose the best products for you. The right products, combined with showering or washing your face, will help you create an effective pre-shave routine that will set you up for an amazing shave. While there are hundreds of different pre-shave products available, you don’t necessarily need to include multiple products in your process. Knowing your skin and hair type will help you know if and what pre-shave products you should use.
One of the most popular pre-shave products for the last few years has been pre-shave oil. Natural oils are very beneficial for your skin as they moisturize and hydrate. If you have oily skin, you may want to be careful how much oil you use, or only use it once or twice a week. Pre-shave oils are made with carrier oils and usually contain essential oils. Some contain vitamin oils for added skin benefits as well. Carrier oils are derived from natural sources, such as seeds or nuts. This makes them especially great for those with sensitive skin, as they are usually gentle. A very common carrier oil used in pre-shave oils is castor oil, which is a natural lubricant. This helps the blade easily glide over your skin and hair. Grapeseed oil is another common oil used in these products. Grapeseed is great for relieving dry and itchy skin. Regardless of which specific oils are included, pre-shave oils are very beneficial as they moisturize your skin and promote elasticity. Most carrier oils do not contain scents. That is where the added essential oils come in. Essential oils are added not only for their natural scents, but also other added benefits. There are hundreds of different essential oils.
While this may seem overwhelming when selecting your product, we have a few steps that will help you choose the right one for you. Depending on your skin type, many essential oils contain specific benefits to help with various skin issues.
Oily Skin – While pre-shave oil is a great product that can offer many benefits, it may not be the best option for those with oily skin. If you have oily skin, pre-shave oils may intensify your condition. However, there are many other product options available. If a pre-shave oil is too much for your skin, try using a pre-shave gel or cream. A gel or cream will also moisturize and protect your skin without heightening your oily skin.
Dry Skin – During shaving, your skin loses moisture. For those with dry skin, including products that help keep your skin moisturized and hydrated is important. Pre-shave oil may be a good product for you, as it helps add moisture back to your skin to keep it hydrated. The carrier oils used as the base for pre-shave oils naturally help add moisture back to your skin and provide an extra layer of protection to prevent excessive dry skin. Certain pre-shave oils also contain added essential oils that help moisturize and hydrate your skin. If you are looking for added moisture, look for a pre-shave oil that contains Lavender, Tea Tree, Chamomile, Sandalwood, or Geranium.
Sensitive Skin – For those with sensitive skin, be careful what ingredients are in your skincare products. Natural ingredients and products are more gentle on your skin and less likely to cause irritation. Pre-shave oils are made primarily with natural oils. The base is made with carrier oils, such as Castor, Argon, Jojoba, or Coconut oils. These natural oils are gentle on your skin and provide moisture and protection. If you are sensitive to certain essential oils, look for a pre-shave oil that doesn’t contain added essential oils, or try Lavender, Frankincense and Sandalwood. If you are trying a new product, you can apply a small amount to your wrist first to see if it irritates your skin before using it on your face. It may be best to try a few different essential oils to find ones that work with your skin.
Normal Skin – Those with normal skin can usually use almost any product. Pre-shave products are designed to offer added moisture, hydration, and protection to your skin. These benefits will always help improve your skin and your shaving process. You can try pre-shave oil, gel or cream to find the right product for you. However, if you notice that your skin doesn’t experience any redness, irritation, or dryness after shaving, you may not need to use a pre-shave product. It is still important to shower or wash your face before shaving, even if you are not using any products.
If you are still not sure which essential oils to try, check out this guide on essential oils for your skin and the benefits of each.
Once your skin and hair are soft and prepped, the next step is to apply pre-shave product. You may still be wondering if you should incorporate pre-shave oil or products into your routine. How do you know if you should use a pre-shave oil? First, look at the type of shaving cream or soap that you are using. Shaving creams in a can usually contain harsh chemicals and synthetic ingredients that can cause irritation and damage to your skin. If you use canned shaving cream, you should consider switching to a better-quality shaving cream that comes in a tub or tube. Better quality shaving creams usually already contain added natural and gentle ingredients to help moisturize your skin and protect it while shaving. If you are already using a good quality shaving cream or shaving soap, you may not need to use a pre-shave product. However, if your shaving cream or soap doesn’t contain added essential oils, or you are looking for added protection and benefits, you can always try a pre-shave oil.
If you decide to use a pre-shave oil, apply the oil to your face and the area that you shave after you have showered or washed your face. You only need to apply a small amount. After you have applied the oil let it sit for a minute to two, then apply your shaving cream or soap. Pre-shave oil can be a good investment, as it can also be used in the post shave process. The added benefits from the oils are great for using after you shave also. The oils hydrate your skin and are a gentle alternative to aftershaves with alcohol. If you are looking for something with a scent, try a pre-shave oil that has added essential oils with your preferred choice of scent.
Your pre-shave process doesn’t have to be complicated or include multiple different products. Remember to always shower or wash your face before shaving. This step alone does most of the work to prepare your skin and hair. Using a pre-shave oil or product can also help moisturize and protect your skin while shaving and drastically improve your shave. To help with the process, we’ve included some of our favorite pre-shave products below.

You don’t want to spend the time and effort getting a close, clean shave without finishing the process. Your aftershave process is very important in your overall shaving and skincare routine. Whether you are new to shaving or have been shaving for years, many people don’t know the actual purpose and benefits of aftershave. When you shave, your skin goes through a lot. It loses some of its moisture, and you may experience irritation, razor bumps or even nicks. It’s important to help your skin recover and rehydrate by following with an aftershave. While you have most likely heard of aftershave lotion or splash, there are actually other types of aftershave available as well. This article explains the differences and benefits of each type of aftershave so you can choose the aftershave product that is best for your skin.
When you think of the term aftershave, you are most likely thinking of the traditional lotion or splash that were the most commonly used type of aftershave for years. Both lotions and splashes are made with a liquid base and usually contain alcohol. A splash usually has a higher concentration of alcohol and a stronger scent, while lotions usually contain less alcohol and have a lighter scent. While lotions traditionally were made with a fairly strong scent, there are now many different types of lotion formulas available, some even available in unscented.
The alcohol in splashes and lotions acts as an antiseptic on your skin. The antiseptic provides a significant benefit. When you shave the warm water opens your pores, which also makes infections more likely. If bacteria enter your pores or if you get any cuts while shaving, you are more prone to infection. Splashes and lotions include antiseptic to help prevent infections in any cuts or nicks that may have happened while shaving. The antiseptic also seals your pores quickly, reducing the chance of infection. It’s important to treat any cuts or nicks with either an alcohol aftershave or disinfectant product to keep your skin healthy. Remember to clean your shaving tools thoroughly and regularly to avoid any germs or bacteria from building up as well.
The alcohol in splashes and lotions also helps seal your pores quickly. This tightens the skin and is also responsible for the light sting that you feel when you first apply it. While some prefer to use formulas with alcohol to tighten their skin and achieve that distinct, invigorating experience, it can also lead to ingrown hairs. If you experience ingrown hairs regularly, make sure you are using proper technique. A double edge safety razor is also more gentle on your skin and less likely to cause ingrown hairs. If you are still experiencing ingrown hairs frequently, you may want to switch to a balm or look for a lotion that doesn’t contain alcohol.
While the antiseptic properties can be very beneficial, alcohol naturally dries out your skin. If you have naturally dry or sensitive skin, be careful when using a lotion or splash. The alcohol can worsen your dry skin or irritate sensitive skin. Luckily, aftershave formulas have evolved and improved in the last few years. You can now find aftershave lotions that are designed to work better for those with sensitive skin. If you prefer the lotion formula but have dry skin, there are even alcohol-free lotions now available. Look for a base that includes aloe vera or other natural ingredients that will help hydrate your skin. You’ll be able to experience the benefit of clean skin and tight pores, with a more hydrating and gentle formula. If you still prefer to use a lotion with alcohol, apply a moisturizer to help hydrate your skin and relieve the drying affect from the alcohol. If these issues persist or get worse, your skin may not respond well to alcohol. If this is the case, you may want to consider a balm.
As men’s shaving and skincare products have advanced, aftershave products have also improved. Aftershave balms were created to offer a more hydrating and gentle aftershave option. There are many different kinds of aftershave balms and creams available for those who need a little extra moisture and relief after shaving. Balms have a thicker consistency than lotions or splashes and are applied like a cream. Most are specifically formulated with carrier oils such as coconut, jojoba, or argon oil. These naturally derived oils offer amazing benefits for your skin and are more gentle. The formula is designed to protect, soothe and nourish your skin, which can be the perfect way to help your skin recover after shaving. Balms are either unscented or have a very mild and light scent.
Due to their unique formula, balms are better at helping to relieve common shaving issues such as razor burn or bumps. Balms are also better for beginners or those with sensitive skin as they are more hydrating and gentle. When you first start shaving, you may be more prone to common shaving issues. If you are new to shaving check out our beginner’s guide for a solid foundation of the best shaving process. Once you have a good understanding of the proper technique and best products, you will be able to choose the best aftershave for you. As you begin to shave more often, you will become more comfortable with your technique and less likely to experience issues or nicks.
For those with oily skin, balms may create an even more oily appearance due to the added carrier oils. If you have oily skin, make sure to only apply a small amount of balm to your skin. Look for an options that doesn’t contain added essential oils. The more oils it contains, the more likely it will exaggerate your oily skin. If you notice that the balm makes your skin too oily, consider switching to an alcohol-free aftershave lotion.
For some, it may come down to skin type. Certain skin types, such as dry or sensitive, are naturally more susceptible to redness, dryness, irritation, or razor bumps. If you have one of these skin types, choose an aftershave balm or cream. If you have very oily skin, a lotion may work better. Make sure to finish your shave properly every time with the aftershave product that suits your skin best.
Whether you prefer a splash, lotion or balm, we’ve gathered some of our favorite and best-selling aftershave products to help you find the best aftershave for you.

The safety razor is commonly known as the “double edged razor” due to the design. It contains double-edged razor blades with a safety guard to prevent any cuts. Safety razors are primarily made from metal and will last for many years. Many are made from medical grade stainless or carbon steel which can be shaved into a thinner, more fine edged blade for a closer shave. Safety razors are available in a wide range of prices, anywhere from $20 to a few hundred dollars for top-of-the-line options. While the razor itself is more expensive at first, safety razor should last for years to come. In the long run, the safety razor offers a more economical option, as cartridge razor blade replacements are more expensive and the razor itself doesn’t last long.
Where some will shy away from safety razors are the initial cost and time to learn how to use it. While it may seem intimidating to shave with a safety razor, it is actually fairly simple to learn how to use. For best results, shave in three step directions: with the grain first, then across the grain, and against the grain last. Make sure to rinse the blade regularly and between each step to avoid clogging. The most significant advantage to safety razors is the added control and direction. Due to the design, you can shave at different angles, allowing a closer shave around all of the natural angles on your face and neck. Once you have mastered the technique, you’ll be able to develop a routine that will create a closer, more comfortable shave.
Depending on how often you shave, you should usually replace your safety razor blades every week or around 5 uses. Replacing your razor blades regularly will reduce skin irritation and offer a closer shave. The disposable razor blades for safety razors are less expensive than cartridge replacements. The average annual cost for replacement blades for safety razors is around $13.
Safety razors are a much better option for men with sensitive skin. Cartridge razors have more blades, and more blades means the additional times the blades are going over the skin. This can cause irritation and redness, especially for those with sensitive skin. While they do require a little extra time initially, they are much less likely to cause irritation and will give a closer shave.
After their invention, cartridge razors experienced a huge growth as they offered a more convenient and time-saving shave and were available at a lower-price. Cartridge razors come in different designs and price levels. They usually include a plastic handle and disposable cartridges that are replaced often. The cartridges range anywhere from 3 to 6 blades. More blades can actually have a negative impact on your skin as it can cause irritation. If you are shaving with a cartridge razor, it is best to use as few strokes as possible to avoid going over the skin repeatedly. Use long, steady strokes with light pressure. Also, because there are more blades it is important to rinse the blade thoroughly after each stroke to avoid build-up.
Cartridge razors are usually the first choice by those who are just starting to shave or those who do not shave often, as they offer a lower time investment and are more convenient to use at first. Shaving with a cartridge razor requires very little learning and offers a quicker shave. Although, the design usually allows for a close shave in only one angle. While it is easy to use, it is more difficult to get a close shave over your entire face and neck.
Although they offer a lower price point, the razors are primarily made from lower quality steel to cut costs. Lower-quality steel blades are not as sharp and can lead to cuts and irritation. The price of the replacement cartridges have also been rising, especially for higher-end options or those with more blades. Cartridge razor blades usually do not need to be replaced as often as safety razor blades, and can last up to a few weeks depending on how often you shave. The average annual cost of replacement cartridges can be up to a few hundred dollars a year.
The greatest advantage of cartridge razors is a lower initial economical and time investment. They have a very low learning curve and offer a quicker shaving time.
When it comes to choosing the best razor for your routine, take into consideration your budget, time, and how often you shave. Is your time and effort of more value to you, or a higher-quality shave? You can still achieve a great shave with each type of razor if you follow the right technique and use the proper tools. We’ve gathered a few of our favorite high-quality safety razor and cartridge razor options below:

To begin, you’ll need to know your specific face shape. The shape of your face plays a big role in finding the perfect beard. If you’re not sure what face shape you have, check out this guide to figuring out your face shape. Once you have determined your face shape, you can start by trying styles that work best for your specific shape:
Round faces have a wider jawline and cheekbones with a shorter chin. If you have a round face, try growing a longer beard that is short on the cheeks. The length of the beard will help elongate your face and emphasize your chin.
The strongest feature on square faces is the jawline. Choose a style that highlights your jawline and gives your chin a rounder look. Try growing a long, narrow beard with a rounded bottom. The beard will also add length to your face. Make sure to keep the sides trimmed in order to not add any width.
With slightly wider cheekbones and a rounded jawline, oval faces can wear almost any beard style. Keep the edges trimmed and use rounded cuts instead of using sharp angles to compliment your oval shape. A short beard with clean and polished lines will compliment this face shape perfectly.
Men with a triangular face shape have a wider jaw and narrow forehead. The best beard styles to compliment this face shape are short and trimmed. You can also try growing a long beard, but remember to keep it short on the sides. Full beards are not typically the best style for triangular faces.
Diamond face shapes are widest in the cheeks and narrow in the forehead and jaw. Try a style with short sides and a longer bottom. A full beard style may also work well by giving your face a more rounded look.
Those with oblong or rectangular faces have wide jawbones with a deep chin. Choose a style that will give you the appearance of a full face shape, such as a circular or rounded beard.
Once you have decided on a style, equip yourself with the knowledge and tools to create an exceptional look. We’ve gathered some of the most popular beard styles and how to achieve them:
Scruff Scruff, or stubble, is not only how your hair looks when you’ve taken a few days off from shaving. Scruff is actually a type of beard style. Scruff is a light layer that fully covers your face and gives you a little texture. Depending on how fast your hair grows, you can usually achieve a good level of scruff in a few days. Once it gets to a length that looks good, keep it styled by trimming. Trim the edges of your cheeks and neck for a more polished look. Whether you have thin hair or it grows in patchy, you can still grow an awesome scruff. This easy style is a great option that almost any guy can pull off.
Classic The classic beard style is the next step after Scruff. This style consists of a full beard that is longer and thicker than scruff, but not too long. You can try different lengths depending on your hair type and face shape. Keep your cheeks and neckline trimmed and clean to keep the shape. You can leave more hair on your neck depending on the style that you are looking for.
Full Beard The full beard takes time and patience to get the perfect look. Give your beard time to grow and fill in properly. Once you have achieved the desired length and thickness you can shape and trim the beard as needed. You can also let it grow out around the sides and neck for a more rugged look. With any full beard style, it is important to style and shape your beard. Products such as beard shampoo and beard conditioner will clean and moisturize, while a beard oil and wax can help you style your beard.
Long Long beards have made a comeback in recent years. This look is not for everyone, but those with naturally thick hair and the right face shape can pull off a bushy, long beard. A long beard can take up to a year or longer to fully grow. Be patient and give it the time and care it needs. Limit your trimming to only the necessities, such as flyaways and uneven hairs. Once you reach the perfect length, keep it groomed and clean with beard conditioners and beard oils.
Goatee The goatee, or circle beard, is a great option if you’re looking for a light facial hair look. This look offers a few different options. You can keep it short and trimmed, or grow it out longer and thicker for a more dramatic look. Try out different styles and lengths to find the best look for your face shape. Trim the edges and sides regularly, or as needed, to maintain the style and shape.
Just as you have most likely experimented with different hairstyles to find the right fit, you can do the same with your facial hair. Try out different styles and lengths until you find the perfect look. Some men can grow full, long beards, and others look better with a short, clean style. If full facial hair isn’t for you, try out a goatee or mustache look. With a variety of different beard styles for men and options to choose from, you can find the one that works best for you. Ultimately, you should choose the style that highlights and compliments your natural looks.

]]>Ingrown hairs are formed when a hair curls back on itself or grows sideways into the skin, causing inflammation and a pimple-like bump. These bumps can cause pain and irritation, and trouble when shaving.
The best way to prevent ingrown hair is to exfoliate. Wash your face and beard a few times a week with a facial scrub or exfoliating cleanser. This will help clear any follicles that are just starting to grow inward and prevent follicles from getting clogged with dead skin cells in the future. Read all about Exfoliation and the best scrubs to use based on your skin type for the best results. Not only does this routine stop in-grown hairs from developing, it also keeps your skin healthy and clean.
Ingrown hairs are more likely to occur if you shave against the direction of your hair growth. Shave with your hair growth to reduce the risk for ingrown hairs. Also, make sure to use slow, even strokes. Shaving too quickly or tugging on the hair can also cause ingrown hairs.
]]>While style and fashion trends are and will always be changing, facial hair has been around throughout the years. In recent years, beards and facial hair were not common, or even tolerated, in certain work environments. The clean, shaven look was largely associated with professionalism. This view is quickly changing though. More and more men today are opting to grow a beard rather than shave. Beards and scruff in the workplace are much more common and accepted today. While this still may be a debate in some industries, such as food or health, it is becoming common in many offices and work environments.
Men are sporting their facial hair at work but keeping it professional by cleaning and grooming regularly. Men are taking more consideration into their facial hair and self-grooming, as they should. This is key to pulling-off facial hair. Not only does regular cleaning and grooming keep your beard looking sharp, it also keeps you healthy. A trimmed and well-groomed scruff or beard can still look great, even in your morning meetings.
Carrying over the clean, well-groomed look into your wardrobe, along with a professional behavior will show that you take yourself seriously. Putting the time and care into how you present yourself will never be a wasted effort. While the specific company that you work for will dictate how you dress and your appearance while on the job, beards at work are becoming increasingly popular. If you are not able to sport a beard at work, then you can still own the clean, smooth shave look.

Many different factors can lead to razor burn, such as dry shaving, shaving too often, shaving too quickly, using an old razor, or not cleaning your razor regularly. Based on your skin type, you may be more prone to razor burn as well. More often than not, it is not the products you use, rather your technique. A proper shave requires a good technique and the best tools.
You can take simple steps to prevent razor burn from ruining your clean shave. There is plenty of debate on the best direction to shave. Shaving against the grain (direction of hair growth) is actually a common cause of razor burn. To reduce the risk of razor burn shave in the direction of your hair growth. Keep in mind that some areas, especially your neck hair, can grow in different directions. Use short strokes, with light pressure.
Take these simple steps to ensure that you face will look and feel great after each shave.
]]>The beginning stages of growing a beard can be challenging. But with great challenge, comes great rewards. Your newly-growing facial hair will be itchy and may be annoying. Beards also often grow in patchy for the first few weeks. You'll have to push through these beginning stages and give it the time it needs to grow. You'll be amazing at the full, strong beard that you'll be able to grow once you've given it time.
While you want let your hair grow long enough before fully shaping, keeping it trimmed will ensure that you don't look unkempt. Trim your cheeks and neckline to keep a well-groomed appearance. If you have any stray hairs carefully trim the area, without shaving too far. Make sure to trim only the neckline, and not on your jaw. The shorter your beard, the more you should shave your neckline. If you are going for a longer beard, once your beard grows out you can leave a little more on your neck.
Your facial hair may look a little awkward, especially during the in between stages. You can easily avoid this by taking some time to shape and groom your beard. Shape and style your beard to improve its look. Shaping is better than trimming at this point, to avoid trimming too much and losing your progress. Products such as beard oils or beard tonics contain natural oils that will help shape your beard, smooth coarse and wiry hair, and keep your skin underneath moisturized. This will also help with the itchy, growing stages. It's important to keep your beard clean. Just as you clean your other hair, it's crucial to clean your beard hair regularly. Use a beard shampoo and beard conditioner to keep it soft and healthy.
Once your facial hair has grown long enough, now is the fun part. Now you can try out different styles and lengths to find what works best for you. If you're not sure where to start, check out this guide on the best beard for your face shape. Be careful when trimming or shaving different styles. Take your time and go slow at first. Remember, practice makes perfect. Once you've perfected your look, all that's left it to keep it trimmed and and in shape.
If you've been thinking of growing a beard but were hesitant to start, now is your chance. Follow these simple steps to achieve your best look.

If you’re looking for a true, traditional wet shave, badger hair is the way to go. There are many benefits, including quality, feel, and lifespan, why you should choose badger hair. We’ve rounded up everything there is to know about badger hair so you can find the best shaving brush that suits your needs. There are a few different types of badger hair used in shaving brushes: silvertip, super, best, and pure.
A shaving brush with silvertip badger hair is the highest quality shaving brush out there, but with high-quality, comes a high price (around $150 or more). However, the silvertip badger hair brushes can easily last more than 10 years. If you take care of your grooming essentials properly, you can spend a little more now for an exceptional brush that will last for years.
Silvertip badger hair shaving brushes have a very distinct look from other types of hair used for shaving brushes. The bottom parts of the hair are black, while the tips are silver (hence the name). Silvertip badger hair is also the softest and feels great when you’re lathering, giving you a nice, smooth, clean shave.
If you don’t want to fork up the money to get the silvertip, the super badger hair is the second-best grade of hair. Only a small step below the silvertip, super badger hair costs anywhere from $70 to $150 and should last a decade if taken care of properly.
Super badger hair shaving brushes look similar to the silvertip with a distinct black and white banding. Due to its very similar and lower price compared to the silvertip badger hair, we would recommend the super over the other types.
Much softer and less stiff than boar or horse hair brushes, but not nearly as soft as the higher grades of badger, lies the best and pure badger hair shaving brushes.
Best badger hair shaving brushes range from light brown to gray in color. Best badger hair also has better water absorbing capabilities and a much softer feel than pure badger hair. They cost about $50 to $100 and last about 6 years.
Pure badger hair shaving brushes can cost anywhere from $35 to $70 and are usually brownish-gray to black in color. The hairs are more flexible than boar bristles and they are also coarser than the higher grades of badger hair. Their stability will perform well for wet shavers who like a massaging effect while preparing to shave. A pure badger lasts an average of three years.

Talcum powder is a refined, powder form of one of the softest minerals in the earth, talc. Mainly made of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen, Talc does not generate a chemical reaction when used on the skin, which is why it is soft enough to use on sensitive baby skin. It also acts as a cleaning agent by absorbing moisture that can aid in sweating and bacteria. Talcum powder is ideal at keeping any type of skin soft and clean.
Talcum powder is best used as the last step in your shaving routine. Pour a small amount of powder into your hands (you can even use your shaving brush) and apply to clean, dry skin. Lightly add the powder to your skin and neck and you're all set. It can also be used as a dry shampoo on your hair or beard when you don't have the time to wash your hair. Going a day or two without washing your hair or beard can be beneficial for your skin and hair, especially if you have dry skin.
Benefits of Talcum Powder:
While you may associate talcum powder for babies bottoms, it's an amazing tool for adults to achieve that smooth, soft skin that everyone will notice.

The type of shaving cream or soap that you use is crucial in achieving a great shave. Both creams and soaps are designed to lubricate the skin and soften the hair before a shave; however, there are a few key differences between the two.
A Brief History
Shaving soaps have been used for hundreds of years and were the classic way to shave for a long time. Shaving creams were introduced later and became very popular in the 1960’s. While you may be thinking of the chemical-laden aerosol cans that were prominent for years (and your dad probably used), we’re looking at something different now. Shaving creams have come a long way. Now there are higher-quality, concentrated options for shaving creams available, usually in a tube or jar.
Basics of Creams
Shaving creams include water, making them easier to lather, either with a brush or your fingers. You can usually create a great deal of cushioning very quickly and with little effort when using a shaving cream. Their easy use makes them a great option if you are starting out and learning how to shave. They also require less time and effort if you are in a hurry. Some creams now include added oils that help lubricate your skin and prevent dryness. Look for quality ingredients and natural oils when choosing a cream.
Basics of Soaps
Shaving soaps typically require added water and a good brush in order to lather and cushion. However, you can achieve an amazing cushion with a soap by using the right technique to lather and whip the soap. Practicing to get the right amount of soap to water ratio, using the right brush, and how to lather, paired with a good shaving soap will get you the best results.
Once you have perfected how to use shaving soap, you’ll be able to create a lather with soap that is usually better than with cream. Shaving soaps are usually made with oils such as coconut or lanolin, and butters, like shea or cocoa. Oils and butters will naturally add and trap moisture in your skin. The added lubrication creates a better lather and will help prevent razor burn or dry skin.
The Nose Knows
Both creams and soaps are available in scented and unscented options. Shaving creams usually have a stronger scent than soaps and are available in a wider variety of scents. Choose which option is best for you based on your scent preferences and how strong of a scent you would like.
Price
When it comes to price, both shaving creams and soaps are available around the same price point. Shaving soaps are on average less expensive than creams because they last longer, but you can find lower or higher budget options for both creams and soaps.
Bottom Line
Whether you prefer creams or soaps, you can still achieve a great shave with practice and the right products.
]]>The Bib&Tucker Guide To Exfoliation
Normal aging, cold and dry weather, excess tanning and many other factors can take a serious toll on your skin. One way to improve your skin and keep it looking healthy is exfoliating. Whether you are interested in trying exfoliating for the first time, or have tried it and are looking for a better scrub for your skin, we're here to help.
If you shave, exfoliation is already a part of your daily routine. It’s an effective way to get younger looking, softer skin. Exfoliation is the processes of scrubbing away dead skin cells, revealing more youthful and vibrant skin. Removing dead skin cells promotes healthy skin and helps prevents acne, ingrown hairs, clogged pores, and unwanted wrinkles.
You'll want to consider your skin type when looking for an exfoliating scrub. If your skin is sensitive, wash with an exfoliating cleanser once or twice a week to avoid irritation, and look for gentle scrubs. Those with naturally oily skin can exfoliate with a scrub or cleanser more often. Look for products that will deeply-penetrate the skin. For dry skin, you'll want to be careful about which scrub you choose. Exfoliating can naturally dry out skin, so only exfoliate once or twice a week and choose products that include moisturizing ingredients. Men with normal skin are more likely to be able to use many types of face scrubs. Test out a few different scrubs and ingredients to find the best for your skin type.
Apply light pressure to your facial skin while exfoliating, a similar touch to what you use while applying your regular cleanser. Gently massage the scrub into your face using circular motions. You can either use your hands or an exfoliating brush. Lightly rub your entire face and then rinse with warm water. You can even skip your daily face wash and replace your cleanser with an exfoliant a few times a week. Exfoliating often can dry out your skin, so it is important to moisturize afterwards, and in between exfoliating.
Showering before you shave will prep your skin for the perfect shave. The moisture and warmth will open your pores and soften your skin and hair. Your skin will be prepped for a closer, easier shave every time.
Slow, precise motions will offer the best results for your shave. Use a steady, constant motion to create a clean, even shave. Go with the grain, the direction your hair is growing, to avoid razor bumps. Applying too much pressure or moving too quickly will also cause irritation. Trust us, it’s worth it.
Razor bumps and ingrown hairs are a common problem; however, they can be easily avoided. Washing and exfoliating your skin will remove buildup and keep your skin clean. Use an exfoliating cream or pre-shave cream before you shave to reduce razor bumps and ingrown hairs. When you exfoliate can depend on how often you shave; however, the recommended amount is no more than twice a week. Here are some of our pre-shave products to help eliminate skin irritation.
Each stroke collects hair and skin in your razor. Rinse your razor after each stroke to remove any buildup in the blade. Taking the time to rinse after each stroke will dramatically improve your shave and keep your razor clean.
Skincare products have come a long way, especially for men. Using quality after products will take your shaving routine to the next level. After you shave, make sure to use a balm or cream to reduce irritation and hydrate your skin. This will keep your skin feeling soft and smooth after the perfect shave. Check out our selection of products here.
Add these simple steps to your routine for the perfect shave every time.
]]>Cruelty-Free
You can take your own cruelty-free pledge and do your part to help the mistreatment of animals by buying cruelty-free products. However, it’s important to note that cruelty-free products aren’t always truly animal-friendly, as they may contain animal ingredients (but they don’t stand by animal cruelty or poor living conditions). This essentially means that they still require the death of an animal to produce these products.
For a product to be cruelty-free there should be no form of animal testing in the creation of the product. This includes brands who also use ingredients from third parties that could also test their products on animals. If you want something completely free of animal ingredients, look for vegan products.
Vegan
A product that is vegan does not contain any traces of animal ingredients or ingredients derived from animals. This includes, but is not limited to honey, beeswax, lanolin, collagen, cholesterol, gelatin, glycerin, and many others.
*Vegetarian products will have honey and beeswax.
*While all of our brands are not listed here, some may still offer vegan and vegetarian products, just remember to read the ingredients!

Many men want a full, strong beard, but give up on their dream because their beard grows in patchy at first. Don't let the first few weeks ruin your chance at an amazing beard. The trick is to stick it out, and let it grow.
If you simply let your beard grow, you'll be surprised at how great it can look once you give it some time. Here is where you need some patience, and patience is key. Don't give up after 3 weeks and shave it off, rather give it the time it needs. Your patience will definitely pay off.
If you’re still looking patchy after a full 8 weeks of growing, maybe, just maybe – you might just have to settle for something short. Trim your beard short, shape your beard at your jawline and just below your cheekbones, and your patchiness will be far less visible. You can also get creative with your beardy style and trim to minimize any patchy areas.
Looking for more tips and tricks for beard growth? This guide to growing and grooming your beard gives you step by step instructions to create your perfect beard.
]]>Some people claim that a beard will make you look older, but the hair actually helps protect your skin from the sun, reducing blemishes and wrinkles. With less sun exposure, you can look younger looking for longer. Research has also shown that facial hair blocks up to 95 percent of UV rays from the sun! This reduces your chance of developing skin cancer from exposure to UV rays. The thicker the beard, the more protection.
Men with asthma, or pollen or dust allergies can benefit from having a beard because (much like nasal hair) it helps filter allergens from the air around you. Your beard can help catch dirt, dust and allergens, keeping them from your nose and skin. Make sure to clean your beard regularly to remove these particles.
More beard means more insulation! Growing a beard during the winter can keep you warm and help prevent colds.
Shaving regularly can present opportunities to a host of skin-related issues – blemishes, ingrown hairs, cuts, and nicks. All of these issues leave your skin open to bacteria and could lead to infections. Your beard adds an extra layer of protection, leaving your skin clear, healthy, and blemish-free.
Your skin secretes natural oils that keep it moisturized. When you shave, that layer of moisture gets removed. Beards allow the natural moisture of your skin to stay intact. They also keep the wind and cold air out, helping your skin battle dryness. Facial hair can help protect your skin and keep it moisturized.
If you're thinking of switching it up and trying out the bearded lifestyle, you can enjoy all of these benefits.
]]>
You may not have thought about the proper grooming and cleaning care that your beard needs, however, this makes all the difference. Your beard, like any other hair, collects dust, dirt and bacteria. While this is a health benefit, keeping those harmful and gross particles away from your face, it can lead to acne and ingrown hairs if not cleaned often or properly. You will need to properly clean and groom your beard to promote good hygiene and healthy hair.
Just as you clean your head hair regularly, your beard hair is no different. Your beard hair may need to be cleaned more often to keep your face and skin healthy. There are many products, from beard washes to beard oils, that can make your cleaning process simple, effective, and keep your beard healthy and looking great.
If these solutions don’t work, it might be best to visit a dermatologist for help to help keep your beard acne at bay.
